Getting Started
Welcome to ZMorning
Learn how ZMorning connects the web dashboard and desktop app so managers can prepare assigned work and employees can track time for the correct employer.
ZMorning in one minute
ZMorning is a task-based time tracking system for managers and employees. Managers prepare projects, tasks, team access, and tracking preferences in the web app. Employees use the desktop app to choose their employer and assigned task, then start and stop a timer. The recorded work becomes available in the web dashboard for review.
How ZMorning works
A useful ZMorning record starts before the timer. The manager first defines where the work belongs and who is responsible for it. The employee then records the actual work session against that setup.
Create a project, task group, and task in the web app.
Add the employee and assign the task to that person.
The employee selects the employer and task, then starts the desktop timer.
Use Overview and Today to review time and any enabled activity data.
Two apps, two day-to-day roles
The web and desktop apps share the same account data, but they serve different parts of the workflow.
Web app
For setup and review
People managing the account use the manager view, shown as Client in ZMorning, to:
- create and rename projects;
- organize task groups and tasks;
- invite employees and maintain their work details;
- control screenshot, keyboard-count, and mouse-count settings;
- review Overview, Today, employee, invoice, and subscription information.
Desktop app
For recording work
Employees use the desktop app to:
- sign in with an activated employee account;
- choose which employer they are tracking for;
- select or refresh an assigned task;
- start and stop the timer;
- review recent tracked sessions and control tracking from the system tray.
When one account has more than one role
An account can use the manager view, shown as Client in ZMorning, the employee view, shown as Employee in ZMorning, or both. An employee can also be connected to more than one employer. When more than one option is available on the Switch context screen, ZMorning asks which view or employer you want to use. That selection controls the projects, tasks, employees, and work records you can see.
What a tracked session can record
ZMorning stores tracked work in ten-minute time slots. Each slot can be connected to the selected task and may include additional activity information when the manager has enabled it for that employee.
- Tracked time
- Work time created while the desktop timer is running, organized into ten-minute slots.
- Task
- The assigned work item selected in the desktop app. Tracking can start without one, but selecting the correct task produces clearer records.
- Activity counts
- Keyboard and mouse event counts collected by minute when those individual settings are enabled. ZMorning records counts, not the text typed.
- Screenshots
- Screen captures taken only when screenshot tracking is enabled. On computers with multiple displays, the employee chooses all monitors or the active monitor when tracking starts.
- Manual time
- Time added from the Today page when live tracking was not used. Manual entries are visibly separate from automatically tracked activity.
Before the first work session
Use this short check to avoid the most common first-day problems.
- The employee has opened the invitation and activated the account.
- The manager has created a task group and a real task in the correct project.
- The task is assigned to the employee who will track it.
- The employee knows which employer to select in the desktop app.
- The manager and employee understand which activity settings are enabled.
Common questions
Can an employee use the web dashboard?
Yes. In the employee view, shown as Employee in ZMorning, the web app limits the experience to that employee's available work information. Daily tracking still happens in the desktop app.
Can tracking start without a task?
Yes. The desktop app can start with no selected task, but the resulting time will not have the task context that makes reporting and review clearer.
Does ZMorning always capture screenshots?
No. Screenshot capture occurs only when screenshot tracking is enabled for the employee under the selected employer.
What happens if the internet connection drops?
The desktop app keeps pending activity and screenshot records locally and retries synchronization. Keep the app open long enough to reconnect and send the queued records.
